A serious new security flaw has been uncovered in OpenAI’s ChatGPT Atlas browser, allowing attackers to plant hidden, persistent instructions within the AI’s memory. Cybersecurity experts warn that this vulnerability could enable malicious actors to inject harmful code, gain elevated privileges, or deploy malware — all while remaining undetected.

Understanding the Exploit

The issue stems from a cross-site request forgery (CSRF) vulnerability, which can be exploited to write unauthorized data into ChatGPT’s persistent memory. Once corrupted, this memory persists across browsers and devices, allowing attackers to take control whenever users engage with ChatGPT for legitimate tasks.

This memory feature, introduced in early 2024, was designed to help ChatGPT “remember” useful details — such as user preferences or past interactions — to personalize future responses. Unfortunately, this same feature can now serve as a gateway for long-term, stealthy attacks.

LayerX Security CEO Or Eshed noted that the attack can effectively turn a trusted AI assistant into a vector for ongoing cyber intrusion, as “tainted” memory triggers malicious actions whenever the AI is used.

Tests have shown that ChatGPT Atlas and other AI browsers like Perplexit’s Comet stop fewer than 8% of known web-based phishing and injection attempts, compared to over 50% blocked by traditional browsers like Chrome and Edge.

How the Attack Works

  1. The user logs into ChatGPT Atlas.
  2. They click a malicious link disguised through social engineering.
  3. The link triggers a CSRF request, silently injecting hidden instructions into the AI’s memory.
  4. When the user interacts with ChatGPT again, the AI unknowingly executes those planted instructions — potentially exfiltrating data or escalating privileges.

This vulnerability highlights a growing concern: AI browsers and assistants are merging identity, code execution, and intelligence into one powerful — and vulnerable — interface.
